New Study Suggests 8 Hours of Sleep is Essential For Fat Loss
A study was published earlier this month examining the effects of sleep on weight loss.
Nedeltcheva, A.V. Imperial, J.M. Schoeller, D.A. and Penev, P.D., (2010) Insufficient sleep undermines dietary efforts to reduce adiposity. Ann Intern Med, 153, 435-441.
The study was split in to two conditions. Both groups consumed 1450 calorie diets however one group was allowed to sleep for up to 8 and half hours whilst the other was only allowed to sleep for 5 and half hours.
They found that reduced sleep reduced the amount of fat loss by 55% and increased the loss of fat-free body mass by 60%. Patients also noted an increased hunger.
Thus for long term weight loss and actually loosing fat getting 8 hours + of sleep is a necessity.

Hi Kieran Is that you in bloody cold water on that huge wave? Interesting study. Wonder why they limited the calories so much? I bet there was a loss of fat free mass in the 8 hour plus sleep group too. However, many women do exactly that reduced sleep, and food and have a hard time making sense of a better way that facilitates daily function, as we KNOW.

No it’s not me, although I was out that day and got one wave of that sort of size, screwed it up though!
The 8 hour sleep group also lost fat free mass (1.5kg vs 2.4kg)
